Woman found not guilty in 2020 Smithville deadly shooting

SMITHVILLE, Mo. — A 50-year-old woman has been found not guilty in the 2020 deadly shooting of Shannon Tate in Smithville, Missouri.

On Monday, April 8, a Clay County jury found Lori Ackerman not guilty on charges of second-degree murder and armed criminal action.

The shooting was reported on the night of Dec. 10, 2020, near S. Commercial Avenue and Tipperary Street.

When officers arrived on scene they found Tate with a gunshot wound. He was taken to an area hospital where he died the next day.

Ackerman and Tate were in a heated argument when they began to struggle over control of a handgun in their Smithville duplex. Ackerman shot Tate during that argument, court records say.
