Woman charged with attempted first-degree murder after shooting in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) — An investigation into a reported shooting by the Baton Rouge Police Department ended with one person in custody.

Mia McKinnis, 26, was charged with attempted first-degree murder, illegal use of weapons or dangerous instrumentalities and aggravated criminal damage to property.

Someone walked into the BRPD Third District, 9000 Airline Highway on Aug. 19, 2023, and alerted officers about a shooting in the 6600 block of Harry Drive.

“Officers learned that the victim and her two sisters were at the aforementioned location when the victim’s vehicle, a 2017 Toyota Camry was damaged by gunfire,” according to BRPD.

The victim said that she picked up her boyfriend and took him to her sister’s house.

She said that at some point, he “got an attitude” and said he was heading to the store, according to the affidavit.

The woman said that she along with her two sisters went to look for her boyfriend after he did not come back, BPRD said.

While en route, the woman said she saw another woman, identified as McKinnis, driving a Nissan. While coming up to the store, the woman said she along with her sisters saw her boyfriend run and get into the Nissan, according to the affidavit.

They followed the Nissan eventually pulling next to it, according to the woman. She said that “she yelled at her boyfriend” and began to drive away.

According to the affidavit, “she noticed an arm come out of the driver’s side window from the Nissan” and while leaving, the woman said she heard a gunshot.

She told police she did not realize her Toyota was hit by a bullet “until she arrived at her sister’s house.” BRPD said the Toyota was hit one time by gunfire on the hood.

The woman picked McKinnis out of a photo lineup.

McKinnis was arrested on Tuesday, May 21, and remains in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on a $200,327 bond.
