95-year-old woman found dead along shoreline in Accomack County

ACCOMACK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — A woman’s body was found along the Melfa, Virginia shoreline according to the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office.

On Sunday March 24 just before 2 p.m., the sheriff’s office received a transfer call from the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) regarding a body found near a private dock on Revell Lane in Melfa, Virginia.

Upon arrival, deputies found an unresponsive woman. EMS crews pronounced the woman dead on the scene.

The woman was later identified as 95-year-old Gretchen P. Ayres from Onancock, Virginia. Her body was transported to the Norfolk Medical Examiner’s Office to determine the cause of death.  However, a preliminary investigation indicates Ayres death was accidental.

The Accomack County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from the Virginia Marine Resource Commission, Onancock Volunteer Fire Department, and the Accomack County Department of Public Safety.
