A woman has been arrested after a charity box was stolen from a council building.

The collection tin for a North East hospice was taken from Newcastle Civic Centre shortly before 11:00 BST on Thursday, Northumbria Police said.

Officers used CCTV to trace a suspect and made an arrest in the Eldon Gardens area of the city centre.

A 35-year-old woman was held on suspicion of theft and has since been released on bail.

Ch Supt Barrie Joisce said: "Following a report of theft in a city centre location, officers in the multi-agency hub were able to work closely together with colleagues to rapidly gather intelligence and set about identifying a suspect."

The arrest was made by officers working in the force's Newcastle City Safe project, which sees police work alongside staff at Newcastle City Council and business improvement district NE1.
