Woman accused of shooting 6-year-old boy in south Columbus makes first court appearance

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — A woman facing aggravated assault charges for a shooting that left a 6-year-old in critical condition made her first court appearance.

Makaila Briscoe, 22, appeared in front of Recorder’s Court Judge Alonza Whitaker on Friday morning.

Briscoe is charged in the shooting of Cameron Thomas, who is currently in an Atlanta hospital with four gunshot wounds. One of those wounds is located on the left side of Thomas’s head.

Thomas was shot on Tracey Street at about 12:30 a.m. while playing with his toy truck in the driveway. The shooting happened during a dispute between Briscoe and one of the victims over a car. It originally started on Facebook where Briscoe said the vehicle had not been returned on-time.

Briscoe was developed as a suspect not long after the shooting. After repeatedly denying any involvement, she admitted to being in the car that fired on the boy and three others. She made her admission with police when they told her a 6-year-old was shot.

Cpl. Jared Berger described the scene during the court hearing.

“She stated that when she turned around and came back, Mr. Raymond shot at them once,” said Berger. “Again, the video shows and the audio shows the only individuals were firing from that vehicle.”

Whitaker ordered the case bound over to Superior Court and Briscoe held on $100,000 bond, $25,000 for each of the four charges.

Columbus Police say the case remains under investigation. Additional charges are expected.
