Police identify woman who died after car struck light pole near I-135 in south Wichita

Monday update:

Brooke Hacker, 41, has been identified as the victim of Easter Sunday’s fatal crash in south Wichita, Wichita police spokesperson Andrew Ford said.

Police previously said she may have suffered a medical emergency during the crash. Wichita fire and Sedgwick County EMS provided life-saving measures but Hacker died at the scene.

The cause of death is being investigated. An autopsy will be done through the Sedgwick County Coroner’s Office.

Previous story:

A 41-year-old Wichita woman died after her vehicle crashed into a traffic light pole Sunday in south Wichita.

The crash was reported shortly before 1 p.m. in the westbound lanes of 47th Street South near Interstate 135. The woman was the only person in the sedan heading west on 47th, Wichita police Sgt. Michael Roets said at the scene.

Her identity was not released.

At this time, investigators think the woman may have suffered a medical emergency. A witness who approached the vehicle said the woman indicated she had trouble breathing after the impact.

Wichita fire and Sedgwick County EMS arrived and performed live-saving measures on the woman — who was no longer breathing — for about 20 minutes before she was pronounced deceased, according to Roets.

“The witness said she went from the left lane, across the right lane and impacted the pole,” Roets said.

Detectives are still working to learn the circumstances that led to the crash. An autopsy will also be done.

“This very likely could’ve been a medical emergency,” Roets said.
