Woman, 28, to be euthanized in May after psychiatrist’s diagnosis: report

(WJW) – A 28-year-old Dutch woman is scheduled to be euthanized in May due to her “untreatable” mental illness.

Zoraya ter Beek lives in a small Dutch town near the German border with her boyfriend and two cats. Due to her depression, autism and borderline personality disorder, she told The Free Press she is tired of living.

According to the Free Press report, ter Beek said she used to have dreams of becoming a psychiatrist, but due to her mental illnesses, she was never able to finish school or start a career.

Although ter Beek said she is in love with her boyfriend and lives in a nice house, she said she decided to die when told by her psychiatrist, “There’s nothing more we can do for you. It’s never gonna get any better,” according to the report.

“I was always very clear that if it doesn’t get better, I can’t do this anymore,” ter Beek told The Free Press.

Ter Beek expects to be euthanized in early May at her home, with her boyfriend by her side.

“No music,” she said, according to the report. “I will be going on the couch in the living room.”

According to the report, ter Beek plans to be cremated.

After her death, her boyfriend will scatter her ashes at a location they have chosen together. According to the report, she will not have a funeral because she doesn’t have a lot of family and doesn’t think her friends will feel like going.

“I’m a little afraid of dying because it’s the ultimate unknown,” she told The Free Press. “We don’t really know what’s next—or is there nothing? That’s the scary part.”

According to BBC News, the Netherlands was the first country to allow legal euthanasia or “mercy killing” in 2001.
