WOLVERINE — Wolverine Community School students will be able to have some new books added to their personal library this summer following the district's partnership with the Kids Read Now program.

Wolverine's kindergarten through fifth grade students will be involved in the program, which mails books home every 10-14 days.

“We are excited to offer the Kids Read Now program to all K-5 grade students this summer," Wolverine superintendent Matthew Baughman said in a press release. "When I was a kid, I would have been beyond excited to receive books in the mail, and feel it will motivate students to read more, which will help them in the fall when they return to school.”

The program is designed to help address learning loss through the summer and includes different multi-lingual guided discussion questions to help increase engagement from the students and their families.

Books are mailed directly to the students' homes and technology is not required.

“The summer extended break would normally mean learning loss — especially among economically disadvantaged students who often live in book deserts and don’t have access to libraries, Wi-Fi or other community programs," Leib Lurie, CEO of Kids Read Now, said in the release. "Our program has been proven to eradicate the typical summer slide and help kids gain up to 2.5 months of learning over the summer."
