Wiregrass teacher recounts life of former student who passed away suddenly

DALE COUNTY, Ala. (WDHN) — A community is mourning the loss of a 18-year-old girl who died early this week.

Shiyawna Bilbo-Pittman died earlier this week of natural causes at Southeast Health in Dothan. The coroner says she had a history of asthma.

Last year, she graduated from Dale County High School, as a Warrior she played in the band and served as a captain and co-captain on the school’s Colorguard.

Teachers say she was also a great student in the classroom, but was an even better person outside of the classroom.

“I will never forget that she wrote me a letter when she graduated high school last year and was very emotional and passionate about what she learned in the band,” Dale County Band Director, Julianne Teal said. “She blossomed in her leadership roles, made friends, and was just a well-rounded student.”

Teal says that she alongside members of the community is continuing to pray for the family as they go through this difficult time.
