Windy weather continues into the weekend
High winds continue through Thursday evening. Gusty winds will stick around through Saturday.
Wind gusts over 60 mph have been recorded in parts of southern New Mexico today. These winds continue to bring areas of blowing dust, reducing visibility. Scattered showers have also developed Thursday afternoon across the northwestern half of New Mexico, but most of this rain is evaporating before reaching the ground. The showers will end overnight and the winds will die down, but some areas will remain breezy.
Another windy afternoon is on the way Friday, but winds won’t be quite as strong as what we are experiencing today. The winds will once again bring a high fire danger though. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will also move into far northwest New Mexico and southwest Colorado by Friday afternoon. This is a part of our next storm system moving through on Saturday.
High winds will return again Saturday afternoon, with gusts up to 55 mph across the southeast half of New Mexico. This will yet again bring a high fire danger and areas of blowing dust. However, this storm is also bringing better moisture. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will move into the northwestern half of the state Friday night through Saturday night, with the best chances for rain in western and northern New Mexico. Light snow will even be possible above 9,000′. Elsewhere, thunderstorms will be possible Saturday afternoon, including the Albuquerque Metro. Temperatures will be cooler statewide Saturday.
Quieter weather returns Sunday with lighter winds and a warming trend starting. This warming trend will continue into the middle of next week, with light to calm afternoon winds. However, a stormier pattern may be setting up in eastern New Mexico late next week.
