WASHINGTON D.C. (WCIA) — U.S. Representative Nikki Budzinski (D-IL) honored the life of beloved UIUC professor and community leader William Patterson in a speech on the House floor of Congress Tuesday.

Patterson died earlier this month unexpectedly. He was 58.

In a one-minute speech, the congresswoman honored his devotion to the Don Moyer Boys & Girls Club and helping local Black students through initiatives like the Hip Hop Xpress Urban STEM Lab.

“As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate Dr. Patterson and his work — work that we must honor by continuing to follow his example of leadership and excellence,” Budzinski said in her speech. “May his legacy live on to empower and inspire young people to blossom into bright, civic-minded leaders for generations to come.”

The full speech can be found on Budzinski’s congressional YouTube page.
