Wifi problem stops TCAP testing at Whitehaven Highschool

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — For a second time, Whitehaven High School students are forced to stop state testing. This week TCAP testing is affected due to Wi-Fi problems.

This comes after a major power outage stopped around 100 students in the middle of end-of-course testing last week. It is now an issue that has state lawmakers involved.

Keith Williams is with the teacher’s union and also represents the Whitehaven area on the school board. He says right now, the Department of Education and Memphis Shelby County Schools have not resolved last week’s issues.

Power outage during TCAP has some worried for Whitehaven High

The DOE says that MSCS has the option to appeal to ensure students aren’t negatively impacted. Williams says that is not enough.

“It impedes the school’s funding, the teachers’ salaries, your students don’t achieve you don’t get the proper growth,” Williams said. “So, it has a broad and expansive impact on everybody.”

Representative Jesse Chism says he wants to make sure neither the students, nor the school are harmed.

“They look the same. Again, we have to get this one right,” he said.

With a small window before a decision must be made, it is now all hands on deck.
