Wichita winter overflow shelter could be moving

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Wichita’s winter overflow shelter could be located in the multi-agency center, according to Sedgwick County leaders.

Sedgwick County’s deputy county manager said the tentative plan is to put the multi-agency center near Humankind Ministries and the winter shelter in the same place.

Sedgwick County Commissioner Jim Howell said several details still need to be worked out.

Multi-agency center will not get state funding, county says

“I’m not sure what kind of dollars are in hand, which dollars are expected, where things are going to go, what purpose and mission of each space has, whether the state is there is an attempt to ask the state for initial help, and is that gone forever?” Howell said.

Some leaders say they are being kept out of the loop.

“I think everyone is confused. I just think that I don’t think anybody knows where we are right now with all these topics. It’s incredibly confusing, and the dollars are very undefined,” Howell said.

Some have suggested trying to get state funding in 2025, but Howell doesn’t believe that is a feasible option.

KSN reached out to the city of Wichita about the possible home for the winter shelter and the multi-agency center, and they said conversations are ongoing and they are looking at multiple locations for the sites.
