Wichita State looks forward with 10 year ‘Master Plan’

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – Wichita State University has its sights set on the next 10 years.

Leaders and an architectural firm presented the school’s 2024 Master Plan this afternoon to students, faculty, staff and the public.

It starts with dividing the campus into various districts based on what those buildings and facilities do for the school: athletics, historic, academic core, innovation and 17th Street gateway.

The university wants to renovate or get rid of older buildings and replace them with facilities anyone can use.

“So if we can take those offline and replace them with state-of-the-art facilities that are multidisciplinary where any college could participate in those facilities and offer classes and laboratories, I think that would be a big step forward for the university,” WSU president Dr. Rick Muma said.

He adds that the projects would likely not be paid for with tuition.

“So the funding of any campus plan is a mixture of money that we have for deferred maintenance already that we get from the state, institutional funds that we have along the way and also mostly private donations through donors,” Dr. Muma said.

He says sometimes student fees are used, but not usually tuition. The school also hopes that these changes will increase enrollment on campus.
