Wichita former resident ‘has what it takes’ to go far on ‘The Voice’

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – AJ Harvey made it onto season 25 of ‘The Voice.’ Those who helped mold the young singer have high hopes.

“I remember working with him on a particular piece that’s difficult for that character, and we’d work with him a little bit, and he came back the next time, and he knew it,” said Lisa Cookson, AJ’s vocal music teacher at Southeast High School. “And he is a performer.”

“And he was just talented from the get-go,” said Martha Dooms, AJ’s theater teacher at Southeast. “And he was the most prepared of any student ever.”

Both are watching closely as the former Wichita native shows his stuff on “The Voice.”

“When he gets advice on ‘The Voice.’ He will take that to heart. He will own that and reflect on that and then try and improve it,” said Dooms.

“Just creativity from within, and he just took it and ran with it, and he had different ideas and was very creative,” said Cookson. “So that’s what I keep talking about. He is a great singer. He is a great musician. But he’s a performer overall, and I think that’s one of his strengths.”

You can watch AJ on “The Voice” as part of Team Dan + Shay. The show airs on Mondays at 7 p.m. and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. Central Time.
