Why is Madera County getting a grant of over $500K?

MADERA COUNTY, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Madera County has been awarded over $500,000 to help make sure the area is ready for possible wildfires.

The grant is part of the 2024 Community Wildfire Defense Grant from the U.S. Forest Service and was announced on Thursday. It’s intended to help at-risk local communities and tribes plan for and reduce wildfire risk. The program is to restore and maintain landscapes, create fire-adapted communities and improve wildfire responses.

“This grant is a significant investment in protecting our communities from the ever-increasing
threat of wildfire,” said Tristan Shamp, Madera County’s Grant Services Manager.

County officials said that Madera County was one of 535 applicants for the grant.
