Who's ready to hit the polls? Voters to decide local races at upcoming regional elections

Apr. 7—Voters are gearing up to decide several municipal and school board races when they head to the polls next week and beyond.

Following is a list of races around the Mitchell area.

Freeman will see an election for its board of education as well as for the positions of mayor and two city council wards.

In the race for the Freeman Board of Education, three candidates will vie for two open positions on the board. Incumbents Doug McCune and Emily Anderson will try to hold their seats against challenger Chris Sayler. Both seats are for three-year terms.

On the city side, incumbent mayor Michael Walter will face challenger Cody Fransen. The position of mayor is a two-year position.

In the race for Ward 1 of the Freeman City Council, incumbent Charles Gering will face Erin Lachman for the seat. In Ward 3, Terry Jacobsen will face Shelly Wanninger. That seat is currently unoccupied. Both city council seats are two-year terms.

The election will be held April 9 at Freeman City Hall.

Voters in Canistota will decide races for both the Canistota City Council and the Canistota Board of Education.

There will be a four-way race for two vacancies on the board of education. Incumbents Jerry Bertelson and Timothy Buseman will face challengers Kaitlyn Killoran and Jeff Merrill. Both seats are three-year terms.

There will also be a race for Ward 2 on the Canistota City Council. Matt Anderson and Brad Jensen will square off against incumbent Jessica Kerher for the three-year term seat.

The Canistota election will be held April 9 at the school gymnasium.

There will be a city council race decided in Scotland next week.

In the race for Ward 1 for the Scotland City Council, incumbent Dennis Bietz will face Kelli King for the seat. That position is a two-year term.

The election will be held April 9 in the city office meeting room.

Candidate petitions have been filed for a June school board election for the Hanson School District.

Voters will decide between three candidates for two open seats on the board. Incumbent Gary Jarding will face challengers Chet McManus and Casey Tegethoff for the position. The seats are three-year terms.

The election is scheduled for June 4 in the school community room.

A city council seat is on the line in Tyndall.

Rodney Skorpik, the incumbent city councilor in Ward 1, will face challenger Dave Vavruska for the seat, which holds a two-year term.

The election will take place April 9 in the Tyndall City Auditorium.

The Kimball School District will fill three seats on the Kimball Board of Education.

The four-way race will include Hillary Lieferman, Justin Blasius, Joshua Krier and James Hoing. The three positions are all three-year terms. Lieferman and Blasius are incumbents on the board.

That election is scheduled for June 4 at the Brule County Courthouse.

Voters will decide between three candidates for two positions on the Chamberlain City Council.

Appearing on the ballot will be Dan Hyland, Ronnie Brown and Ron Madison. Brown currently serves as an incumbent on the council. Council positions in Chamberlain are at-large bids, meaning the two candidates receiving the most votes will win the two seats.

Terms on the council are three-year terms.

That election is also scheduled for June 4 at the Brule County Courthouse.

Two seats on the Lake Andes City Council will be decided on June 4. Lake Andes is located in Charles Mix County.

In Ward 2, incumbent Steven Nielsen is being challenged by Drew Avant.

In Ward 3, incumbent Clifford Parker is being challenged for his seat by candidate Ricky Bergin.

The Lake Andes election will be held on June 4.

A trio of seats on the Wagner City Council will be decided on Tuesday, April 9.

In Ward 1, George Langdeaux is facing off against Danial Cimpl. Langdeaux currently holds the Ward 1 seat.

A two-way race in Ward 2 features Gene Niehus and William "Rich" Dufur.

Incumbent Colby Kirwan is being challenged by Brenda Jaton for the Ward 3 seat.
