A white Florida teen has just been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of a Black girl as she walked with her friends from a movie theater. A police spokesperson said the crime was not a random act of violence.

The three teen girls were leaving the Coralwood 10 movie theater the night of March 17 and were headed to a nearby McDonald’s on Del Prado Boulevard South when suddenly, their route was interrupted by a vehicle’s bright headlights, per Cape Coral police. A silver Nissan Pathfinder SUV approached the group, blinding them as it whipped around. Then, a group of suspects got out of the car and tried to rob the Black girls.

One of the witnesses says one suspect pulled out a gun and began firing at the girls. One shot struck 15-year-old Kayla Rincon-Miller in the chest.

Police say the suspects got in the car and fled the scene. When officers responded to reports of shots fired, they arrived at the scene to find Rincon-Miller suffering from a gunshot wound. They rendered aid and transported her to the hospital where she died.

The alleged shooter, 16-year-old Thomas Roy Stein, has been caught.

Lisa Greenberg, spokesperson with Cape Coral Police, said officers arrested Thomas Roy Stein, 16, of North Fort Myers, who faces homicide charges. He was in court early Wednesday.

“Our detectives know there are others involved in this homicide, and there is still more work to be done,” police said in a news release. “Cape Coral Police Department detectives’ diligent work around the clock continues today to narrow this investigation.”

Greenberg said that, based on the evidence, police do not believe the shooting was a random act of violence.

As Cape Coral police investigate the potential premeditated motive, it’s also unclear if Stein’s parents could be held accountable on accessory charges being that their car was used in the commission of the crime.

For now, Stein is back on the loose after being released less than two hours of being booked in jail Wednesday night, per jail records. Meanwhile, Rincon-Miller’s cousin has set up a GoFundMe for donations to organize the teen’s funeral.

“Kayla, born on May 20, 2008, brought joy and light into the lives of her parents, Luz and Winston,” reads the fundraising page. “Her passing has left our family devastated, mourning the loss of this beautiful soul.”
