The No. 5 Gonzaga University Bulldogs plays the No. 1 Purdue University Boilermakers in March Madness action on Friday. The two universities will square off at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, Michigan for the 2024 NCAA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament at 7:39 p.m. ET.

Where is Gonzaga University?

Gonzaga's main campus sits in Spokane, Washington, about a half hour's drive west from the state's border with Idaho. It's 279 miles east of Seattle, and 320 miles east of Olympia, Washington, the state capital.

Founded in 1887, the school was known as Gonzaga College until 1912. Gonzaga is a member of the West Coast Conference, which it joined in 1979.

What is Gonzaga University's mascot?

Gonzaga University's mascot didn't begin with a $500 mail order bulldog costume with an oversized head and underbite.

Their mascot actually began with a live bulldog named Teddy Gonzaga, in 1921. More live bulldogs followed as years passed, until 1985, when the university finally bought a Bulldog suit and named it Spike.

Has Gonzaga ever won an NCAA tournament title during March Madness?

Gonzaga has participated in 26 NCAA tournaments in its history and compiled a 46-25 record. Current head coach Mark Few is responsible for 24 of those tourney trips and has a 43-23 March Madness record.

The Bulldogs have never won a tournament title, but they advanced to the national championship games in 2017 and 2021. They lost to Baylor in 2021 and fell to North Carolina in 2017.

Gonzaga has advanced to the regional finals, also known as the Elite Eight, another four times, including three with Few as the head coach.
