Where to Donate to Fight Trump's Immigration Ban
On Friday, President Trump signed an executive order banning refugees and others coming into the United States from seven majority-Muslim nations. The order, widely labeled as a "Muslim ban," has since faced immense opposition, leading to nationwide protests in the streets and at airports. As well as getting involved in the demonstrations, if you're looking to do your part to help refugees or others personally affected by the ban, here is a list of organizations to that need your donations.
1. The American Civil Liberties Union
Following Trump's Muslim ban announcement leading to the detainment of two Iraqis passengers who could not exit JFK airport on Saturday January 28, the ACLU filed a lawsuit against President Trump on their behalf. The ACLU was first to file against Trump's executive order, and so far, the organization has raised more than $24 million in donations. Donate to the ACLU here.
2. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees
The main focus of the UNHCR is to provide refugees in war-torn countries with necessities like hygiene kits, sleeping bags, and medicine. The organization began to distribute goods to the people of Aleppo on December 12.
3. Oxfam International
Oxfam International is an anti-poverty program that helps assist refugees by providing showers, clean water, and toilets to those currently living in refugee camps. The organization also provides refugees with medical aid and legal advice. Donate to Oxfam here.
4. International Refugee Assistance Project
The IRAP, is one of the first organizations to provide legal aid, representation, and policy advocacy on behalf of refugees who need resettlement. The organization puts together law students and lawyers to help develop legal rights and systemic advocacy for refugees. Donate to IRAP here.
5. Refugees Welcome
This organization that began raising funds for refugees who have fled to places in Europe assists refugees who are seeking homes and places and to stay. The nonprofit organization, which is based in Berlin, Germany, matches those who sign up with and offer their spare rooms with with refugees seeking housing. Donate to Refugees Welcome here.
6. Karam Foundation
The foundation's goal is to help build a better future for the people of Syria, and focuses mainly on developing education programs for Syrian refugee youth while also distributing aid to families. The Chicago-based organization picked the name "Karam," which means generosity in Arabic, in hopes of giving back and helping the Syrian community. Donate to the the Karam Foundation here.
7. The White Helmets
The Syrian Civil Defense, also known as the White Helmets, are a group of volunteers who search recently bombed locations and rescue surviving and or trapped civilians and provide them with aid. So far, the group has successfully saved more than 73,530 people from attacks in Syria. You can help by donating to the cause here.
8. American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee
The ADC is a civil rights organization dedicated to defending the rights of Arabs serving as a voice for Arab community in the U.S. The organization fights against discrimination, hate crimes and bigotry by promoting a better understanding of Arab culture and supporting all human rights. 9. The International Rescue Committee
The IRC's main mission is to meet with those who have recently fled Aleppo, Syria, due to the conditions of war where citizens experience daily air strikes, sieges and executions, and are working to make the near-by-town of Al Dana home. Al Dana is currently preparing for the influx of displaced people, who have been driven away from Aleppo and into the city. Donations to the IRC will go towards providing families who have escaped the city with necessities such as food, gas and emergency supplies like bedding, soap and towels.
10. Doctors Without Borders
Doctors Without Borders is dedicated to providing medical assistance to war-torn countries such as Syria. On November 17, 2016, one of the organization's Aleppo hospitals suffered from an air strike that killed more than 20 workers and patients. Since the strike, aid workers have remained in the city and aim to continue to help Aleppo citizens despite the violence. Donate to the doctors here.
11. The Committee to Protect Journalists
This international organization, which gained spotlight after Meryl Streep's powerful Golden Globes speech, helps protect the freedom of journalists to report as well as supports those who have been attacked, captured or imprisoned while reporting. Supporting journalism will allow more reporters to continue breaking news and bringing awareness about global events such as protecting and helping Syrian refugees. Donate to the CPJ here.
12. Council on American-Islamic Relations
CAIR is the largest Muslim civil liberties organization in the country, dedicated to creating a better understanding of Islamic culture while helping to protect civil liberties and empower American Muslims. The civil rights advocacy group, which is headquartered in Washington D.C., has recently challenged President Trump's ban. Donate to CAIR here.
