Where are the cheapest prices for grocery essentials at DMV supermarkets?

WASHINGTON (DC News Now) — Grocery store visits are slightly more costly compared to the start of last year, according to the latest federal Consumer Price Index report.

Given uncertainty about costs, DC News Now continues to track where 10 kitchen table essentials are most affordable at major supermarkets in the DMV.

Why are we price checking? The U.S. Department of Agriculture said grocery prices rose 5% last year when meats, dairy and fats and oils became more costly. In the meantime, the agency said food prices have increased 25% over the past four years.

According to prices published online Friday, DC News Now compared the lowest cost of some grocery store essentials found at Walmart, Giant and Safeway.

The lowest price offered per pound of boneless porkchops got cheaper in two weeks at Giant and Safeway but doubled in price at Walmart, coming in at $4.29 a pound at Giant and $4.78 at Walmart.

One pound of ground beef went down in price in one week at Walmart and Safeway; the latter is $3.66.

Boneless chicken breast was listed cheapest at Walmart for $2.67 while it was priced as $4.49 at Giant.

A carton of 12 brown eggs, a loaf of wheat bread, a 12 oz. bag of broccoli and fresh avocadoes were all found to be the cheapest at Walmart.

Shoppers can save $1.87 at Walmart compared to Safeway for a carton of brown eggs and save $1 for wheat bread compared to Giant.

In one week, DC News Now also found no changes in the lowest price for a gallon of 2% milk, a 32 ounce bag of brown rice and russet potatoes.
