CHICAGO — WGN Sports Anchor Pat Tomasulo is remembering a beloved mail carrier who was fatally shot Sunday night.

Damian Dunning was identified by his family as the man shot and killed in his vehicle on the Stevenson Expressway ramp to DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

Dunning, 41, was a a US Postal Service worker on the city’s Southwest Side who was known by the community as a friendly and kind man.

In 2021, Dunning appeared on WGN-TV as part of a Morning News skit in which Tomasulo went “pool-hopping” on the South Side. Dunning was delivering mail in the area when the sports anchor asked him to go swimming.

The mail carrier took Tomasulo up on his offer, and wound up taking a dip for the sketch— during what Dunning said was his 15-minute break.

In a Facebook post shared Tuesday, Tomasulo wrote:

“So sad to hear about the senseless killing of Damian Dunning. For those who remember our pool-hopping bit on WGN Morning News, Damian was the mailman who jumped in a neighbor’s pool with me. Part of the science to doing bits like this is being able to figure out who is approachable, and who would be fun. And his big smile and approachability made Damian a no-brainer. My deepest condolences to his family, especially his 8-year old son.”
