Westport voters say 'no' to a debt exclusion and elect a new Select Board member

WESTPORT — The town of Westport won't be going for an override to fund a major water project, and will be getting one new Select Board member, based on unofficial results from Tuesday's election.

According to yet-to-be certified counts, voters shot down the ballot question asking to approve a debt exclusion to fund $35,000,000 for the "Westport Route 6 Sewer and Water Project." The project would have brought town sewer infrastructure to Route 6, where its absence has been said to be "a barrier to economic development."

In the three-way contested Select Board race for two three-year terms, incumbent Richard Brewer and candidate Craig Dutra were the top two vote-getters, with Brewer getting 2,121 votes and Dutra getting 1,806, according to unofficial counts. Candidate Nancy Stanton-Cross got 1,581 votes. Stanton-Cross did not run for re-election to her current position on the School Committee.

Other new members and incumbents

In other election news, the School Committee gets two new members, Jason Pacheco and Christopher Thrasher, who both won three-year terms, and the Housing Authority gets new member Timothy Michael Cayton for a five-year term.

Uncontested incumbents who won re-election were Robert Daylor (Planning Board, five years), Sue Ann McDermott (Board of Assessors, three years), Phillip Weinberg (Board of Health), Laura Beth Bennett (Library Trustee, three years), and Donald Davidson Jr. (Library Trustee, three years).
