Western Hills Viaduct bottom deck closure scheduled Saturday; detours planned

The bottom deck of the aging Western Hills Viaduct will be closed Saturday.

The Cincinnati Department of Transportation and Engineering announced the closure scheduled for 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday in a news release. Crews and engineers will conduct an inspection and routine maintenance.

Detour signage will be posted to help motorists. Maintenance includes sweeping, concrete sounding checks and chipping off loose concrete. Engineers will also conduct an inspection during the closure.

Two associated closures will also take place to accommodate crews at work and equipment, including:

  • The ramp at exit 2B from southbound Interstate 75 to the viaduct will also close. Drivers can detour onto the 2A Western Avenue exit off I-75 south.

  • Spring Grove Avenue between Harrison and Marshall avenues will close to through traffic until 3:30 p.m. Those heading south on Spring Grove Avenue will be detoured via Marshall Avenue to Central Parkway. Drivers traveling north will be detoured at Harrison Avenue to Brighton Place.

Originally built in the early 1930s, the Western Hills Viaduct carries more than 55,000 vehicles a day over the Mill Creek Valley and a large, active railyard. It is reaching the end of its useful life, according to the city.

Construction on a replacement bridge is expected to begin in 2026 . The old bridge will stay in place until the new bridge is finished in 2030.
