West Virginia State Math Field Day to be hosted by Concord University

ATHENS, WV (WVNS) — The 2024 West Virginia State Math Field Day will be hosted by Concord University.

Math Field Day will be from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, 2024. Testing will take place in Marsh Hall and the Science Building, and opening remarks and closing events that includes an award ceremony.

The West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the NASA West Virginia Space Grant Consortium are part of the sponsors for the event.

224 students from across West Virginia in grades 4-12 will be at Concord University to compete during West Virginia State Math Field Day. The students were winners at one of eight regional events.

The students in grades 4-9 who get the highest scores in each grade level, and collectively in grades 10-12 will receive awards, and 15 of the 10-12 grade students will go on to the West Virginia American Regions Math League team.

There are 24 participants, 3 for each region, for each grade level 4-9. Six events are planned for those grades on West Virginia State Math Field Day. These events include: a written exam, physical estimation (grades 4-8), short answer (grade 9), mental math, estimation computation, a surprise activity, and relays. The events are not only meant to be a challenge, they are also meant to be fun.

Grades 10-12 will have 80 participants, ten for each region, with two individual events and three team events. The individual events include short answer questions and a written exam, and the team events include relays, team questions, and team power question.

The math faculty at Concord University wrote the questions for the events, and the events are designed after the ones used in The American Regions Mathematics League (ARML).

Other optional activities will be available for families on Friday evening and during breaks on Saturday.

West Virginia State Math Field Day Organization is a non-profit and independent organization. May 16, 1975 was the date of the first West Virginia State Math Field Day, which was held with the 1975 West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Meeting.

West Virginia State Math Field Day was created to encourage student participation not only in the classroom, but to also include extracurricular math. The event is also meant to help create interest and peer interaction, while acknowledging students who are good at math.
