Apr. 18—The West Virginia Association for Young Children (WVAYC) took a significant step Monday by presenting a petition with over 2,000 signatures to Governor Jim Justice, calling for urgent action to address the critical need for funding enrollment-based payments for childcare providers across the state. With signatures still pouring in, the WVAYC underscores the pressing necessity for Governor Justice to convene a special session to prioritize childcare funding.

Childcare providers in West Virginia are the backbone of our communities, supporting working families and ensuring the early development and education of our youngest citizens. However, the current reimbursement system for childcare services lacks sustainability and adequacy, placing an immense strain on providers who are struggling to maintain high-quality care while remaining financially viable.

—Enrollment-based payments ensure that childcare providers receive fair compensation for the services they provide, reflecting the actual number of children in their care. This model guarantees stability for providers and encourages them to continue offering quality services.

—Adequate funding for childcare providers enables them to keep their doors open and maintain affordable rates for families. Without proper reimbursement, providers may be forced to limit enrollment or close altogether, exacerbating the already critical shortage of childcare slots in West Virginia.

—High-quality early childhood education lays the foundation for future academic success and social development. By investing in enrollment-based payments, West Virginia can ensure that children receive the enriching experiences they need during their formative years, setting them up for lifelong achievement.—Accessible and affordable childcare is essential for a thriving economy. Working parents rely on reliable childcare services to remain in the workforce, contributing to the state's economic productivity. By supporting childcare providers through enrollment-based funding, West Virginia can foster a robust workforce and attract businesses seeking a family-friendly environment.

The West Virginia Association for Young Children urges Governor Jim Justice to heed the voices of over 2,000 concerned citizens and prioritize the needs of our state's childcare providers. By calling a special session to address funding for enrollment-based reimbursements, Governor Justice can demonstrate his commitment to supporting working families, investing in early childhood education, and fostering economic prosperity across West Virginia.
