(KRON) – A West Point cadet was found dead this week following what officials believe to be an accidental drowning, the United States Military Academy has confirmed.

Havin Morris, 21, was on leave in Florida at the time of his death, West Point officials said. Police do not suspect foul play.

“Cadet Morris was a valued member of the Corps of Cadets, committed to serving his country as an Army Officer. The entire West Point community offers our heartfelt condolences to the Morris family,” West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. Steve Gilland said in a news release issued Tuesday.

Morris’ tactical officer, Maj. Rebecca A. Gogue, further described him as “a bright, resilient young man with a determination to succeed in all he did.”

Police in Fort Lauderdale issued a missing persons alert for Morris on Monday, saying he was last seen “overnight Saturday night.” He was in the area for spring break, according to police.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported that Morris had gone missing after visiting a nightclub with friends. His body was found Monday night in the New River, according to the outlet.

Morris, from Pleasanton, California, graduated from a Pleasanton high school in 2020. The Pleasanton school district also issued a statement on his passing.

“We are saddened by the loss of one of our former Amador Valley High School alumnus. Our hearts go out to the Morris family and those who Havin touched the lives of during this difficult time,” reads the statement.

West Point said Fort Lauderdale police and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command are investigating. The army appointed a casualty assistance officer to Morris’ family.
