Weld County DNA analyst fired after ‘anomalies’ in casework

DENVER (KDVR) — The Weld County Sheriff’s Office fired a DNA analyst, who worked at a local lab for over 10 years, after an investigation found “anomalies” in her work.

On Friday, the sheriff’s office terminated Chiara Wuensch, a Northern Colorado Regional Forensic Lab DNA analyst.

The internal investigation began in late January, which was centered on Wuensch having anomalies in her casework, according to the sheriff’s office.

Based on the findings, Wuensch allegedly violated the Weld County Code for expectations of proper conduct as well as the sheriff’s office standards of conduct policy for “not cooperating with the agency’s internal investigation.”

The sheriff’s office said the anomalies in Wuensch’s casework were limited, but the criminal investigation is still determining the impact.

The sheriff’s office intends to pursue criminal charges against Wuensch. Those charges haven’t been determined as the investigation is still ongoing.

No further information will be released until its conclusion, the sheriff’s office said in a press release.

The news comes months after the Colorado Bureau of Investigation opened an investigation into a former scientist for anomalies in her work.
