Weekend freeway closures to impact Phoenix-area drivers. Here's what to know

Corrections & Clarifications: Closures of U.S. 60 ramps to the Loop 101 were listed incorrectly in a previous version of the article.

A new round of freeway closures in the Phoenix area will take effect Friday night and impact drivers through Sunday, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.

ADOT will either shut down or heavily restrict traffic on portions of Interstate 10, Interstate 17, U.S. 60 and Loop 101.

The agency recommends drivers take a breath and build in extra time to deal with detours and increased traffic.

The closures follow ADOT's pattern of weekend closures for planned freeway maintenance across the Valley, including the much-anticipated Broadway Curve Improvement Project aimed at expanding lanes for the busy Phoenix metro sections of I-10.

Here's what to know ahead of the weekend.

Southbound I-17 closed for 2 miles

From 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, the southbound lanes of I-17 between State Route 74 and Loop 303 just north of the Phoenix area will be closed for a repavement project.

The southbound ramps for I-17 at Daisy Mountain Drive and Pioneer Road will be closed for the same span of time.

ADOT suggested drivers exit I-17 ahead of the closures for SR 74 and use southbound Lake Pleasant Parkway to eastbound Loop 303.

Northbound Loop 101 closes in Tempe

From 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, the northbound lanes of Loop 101 will be closed between U.S. 60 and Broadway Road for pavement work.

Both U.S. 60 ramps to northbound Loop 101 will be closed, along with northbound Loop 101 on-ramps at Warner, Elliot and Guadalupe roads.

ADOT recommended exiting ahead of the closure and using the northbound Price frontage road before connecting with northbound Loop 101 beyond the closure; or using local routes Dobson Road or McClintock Drive to proceed north.

Eastbound US 60 closed for 2 miles in Mesa

From 9 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday, eastbound lanes of U.S. 60 will be closed between Loop 202 and Crimson Road for lane marking work.

Loop 202 ramps to eastbound U.S. 60 will be closed, along with U.S. 60 on-ramps at Power and Elliot roads.

ADOT suggested drivers headed east on U.S. 60 exit before the closure and use Baseline Road or Southern Avenue to access the freeway beyond the closures.

Eastbound I-10 narrowed to 3 lanes

From 10 p.m. Friday until 2 p.m. Saturday, eastbound lanes of I-10 between 40th Street and U.S. 60 will be reduced to three lanes.

ADOT added that the eastbound I-10 ramp to eastbound U.S. 60 also would be closed, along with the eastbound I-10 off-ramp at Baseline Road, which will close for two months starting Friday.

ADOT recommended drivers consider using the HOV ramp to access eastbound U.S. 60.

Grand Avenue narrowed to 1 lane in both directions

From 11 p.m. Friday until 3 p.m. Saturday, and again from 11 p.m. Saturday until 3 p.m. Sunday, both directions of Grand Avenue will be narrowed to one lane between Center Street and State Route 74 for pavement sealing.

ADOT recommended westbound drivers use northbound Loop 303 to Lake Pleasant Parkway and westbound State Route 74 to avoid the restrictions, and eastbound drivers from Wickenburg to do the same.
