Weather Permitting: Here's the forecast for the Fayetteville Dogwood Festival weekend

Temperatures will return to normal, briefly, for the Cape Fear region this Dogwood Festival weekend with another strong warming trend arriving in time for May.

Meanwhile, light scattered showers have done little to ease an increasingly dry stretch across Central North Carolina.

As a result, gardeners will want to have watering cans and hoses on hand for what looks like a dry, warm week. There's not really any expectation of showers for at least another seven days — if then.

Here's the setup

High pressure has settled over the Carolinas, giving us plenty of sunshine and dry dew points. The air is coming from Canada, so look for mild days with cool mornings into the weekend.

Fayetteville will see highs slowly climb into the mid- then upper 70s through the rest of the work week. Overnight lows will dip into the low to mid-50s locally, upper 40s to the north and west. There's no thought of showers interrupting outdoor plans.

The weekend

As high pressure slowly shifts offshore, our flow swings back to the east, then south. Some clouds may result but, again, don't look for rain.

Saturday looks pleasant, if a bit cloudy, with highs in the upper 70s and dew points in the low 50s. Sunday should be Fayetteville's first day back above 80 in a week, topping out at 82 or so. Overnight lows both days will hold in the upper 50s.

It looks like a seasonal start of the week for the region.

Down the road

Monday takes the Cape Fear region back into the upper 80s, and by Tuesday it's possible we'll see 90 to the south of Fayetteville. A weak front approaches the state, but as of now it doesn't look like it has the support to push into our region.

Look for clouds and a high near 90 as we close out April. Lows will stay in the low 60s.

In the tropics

Would you believe we actually had our first tropical outlook this week? A system off the African coast flared up briefly, but conditions are nowhere near conducive for development. But, given the abnormally warm sea temperatures and persistent early Bermuda-Azore high-pressure systems, could it be a harbinger of the season to come?

We shall see. Meanwhile, have a great weekend!
