Significant rainfall is coming this weekend, according to the National Weather Service in Mount Holly.

Rainfall is expected to start Friday night and continue through Saturday night as a coastal low-pressure system from the South passes through New Jersey.

"So, this is what we call a coastal system or coastal low coming through," said NWS meteorologist Mike Lee.

"This one is going to develop around the Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, bringing us some moisture from the Gulf of Mexico and against a typical coastal system for Jersey," he added.

The Shore region will receive the most rain with forecast totals between 3 and 4 inches. The Northwest region of the state is expected to receive from 1.5 to 2 inches.

NWS has not issued any advisories for coastal flooding at this time.

"Astronomical tides are a little bit lower. Right now, coastal flooding risk isn't as high, but we're gonna take a look at that as we get closer," Lee said.

Saturday night will be windy with northwest wind gusts up to 40 mph.

Given how saturated the soils are, gusty winds may cause some power outages and downed trees, said the NWS.

The storm is expected to hit New Jersey Friday night through Saturday night.
