Weather expected to be cool and possibly rainy for Memorial Day in Greater Grand Forks

May 26—GRAND FORKS — Preparations were made late last week for Memorial Day events in Greater Grand Forks. Now, it's a matter of hoping rain will hold off.

According to a forecast from the National Weather Service, Memorial Day could be marked by thunderstorms and showers.

On Monday for Greater Grand Forks, the National Weather Service predicts a chance of showers and thunderstorms, with a 50% chance of precipitation. The day will be mostly cloudy, with a high near 62. North winds will be present, from 7 mph to 17 mph, with gusts up to 24 mph.

New rainfall amounts could be less than a tenth of an inch, "except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms," the agency said in its forecast.

On Monday, a number of communities in the region will host Memorial Day events, including both Grand Forks and East Grand Forks.

In Grand Forks, there will be an American Legion event at 9:30 a.m. Monday, at the Memorial Park North Cemetery at Gateway Drive and Columbia Road.

At 11 a.m. will be a ceremony at Memorial Cemetery South in Grand Forks, hosted by the VFW Post 1874, DAV Chapter 2 and Auxiliaries.

In East Grand Forks, a program is scheduled for 11 a.m. at Resurrection Cemetery.

Meanwhile, the Red River Valley in the Grand Forks region is in a flood warning. Saturday, the National Weather Service said minor flooding is forecast on the river at Greater Grand Forks and northward to Oslo.

The river is expected to rise above flood stage Monday evening.
