Wear blue for ‘Child Abuse Prevention’ month

EL PASO, Texas (KTSM) — The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) is holding an event on Friday, April 5, to bring awareness to “Child Abuse Prevention” month.

The event will feature a balloon release at 9:30 a.m. at the DFPS building located at 501 Hawkins Boulevard. Participants are encouraged to wear blue.

Guest speakers include Pastor Eric Hallback of the Rock Faith Center and Sandra Jackson from Peak Behavioral Health.

During the month of April, DFPS is collaborating with local governments, organizations and community groups to bring the spotlight on recognizing and reporting child abuse, according to DFPS.

According to DFPS, there are more than seven million children in Texas and 250,000 in the El Paso area.

More than 1,000 children are confirmed to be victims of child abuse/neglect in El Paso, according to statics by DFPS.

“Our goal for this month is to reach as many individuals as possible to equip families with knowledge and resources to support child abuse prevention practices in Texas,” said Sasha Rasco, DFPS chief prevention and community well-being officer.

If you suspect child abuse or neglect, contact the Texas Abuse Hotline at 800-252-5400 or report online at TxAbuseHotline.org.
