Wausau firefighter severely injured while fighting Tuesday church fire

WAUSAU − A city firefighter suffered severe injuries while fighting a structure fire Tuesday.

At 3:57 p.m. Tuesday, the Wausau Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Wesley United Methodist Church, 1101 Elm St., according to a fire department news release. During the operation, a Wausau firefighter sustained severe injuries and received immediate medical attention. An ambulance took the firefighter to a hospital.

"We are relieved to report that the firefighter is expected to recover from their injuries," Wausau Fire Chief Jeremy Kopp said in the release. "Our thoughts are with (the firefighter) and (the firefighter's) family during this time."

Crews extinguished the fire, which was confined to the attic space of the church, preventing further damage.

The Wausau Fire Department is grateful for the outpouring of support from the community, Kopp said in the news release.
