Water advisories issued for these 9 San Diego beaches due to bacteria

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Nearly a dozen water contact advisories have been issued in recent days for San Diego beaches with high levels of bacteria.

The county’s Beach and Bay Water Quality Monitoring Program is constantly watching the bacteria levels in the ocean along San Diego County’s 70 miles of beaches, and has the latest water advisories, warnings and closures online here.

Signs are also posted in affected areas.

An advisory is issued to warn beachgoers when levels of bacteria test higher than state health standards.

When an advisory is in place, the public is cautioned to avoid water contact in affected areas as the high levels of bacteria in the water can contain pathogens that can cause people to contract illnesses such as gastroenteritis, respiratory disease, fever, rashes, paralysis, meningitis, infections in bloodstream, or diarrhea, according to the county’s water quality monitoring program.

The four beach closures in place are the same chronic closures that have been in place in recent months and years, including the Tijuana Slough Shoreline in Imperial Beach, which has been closed for more than 800 consecutive days from cross border sewage pollution. The county’s water quality monitoring program notes samples are taken every day in that area.

Other beach closures include the Coronado shoreline from Avenida Lunar to North Beach; Silver Strand Shoreline from north Carnation to south of Avenida Lunar; and the Imperial Beach Shoreline from the south end of Seacost Drive through Carnation Ave.

Just this past weekend, San Diego’s congressional delegation called on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to launch an investigation into the public health impacts of the Tijuana River sewage crisis.

Amid San Diego’s forecast of mostly sunny and 70s all week, there is a small craft marine advisory in place from 3 p.m. Monday to 3 p.m. Tuesday in the waters from Pt. Sal to Santa Cruz Island, including San Miguel and Santa Rosa Islands, and the outer waters from Santa Cruz Island to San Clemente Island to 60 NM offshore including San Nicolas and Santa Barbara Islands, the National Weather Service reports.
