WATCH: San Angelo reacts to total solar eclipse

SAN ANGELO, Texas (Concho Valley Homepage) — San Angelo citizens gathered across the city on their lunch breaks to watch the total solar eclipse, which will not be seen again until 2044.

“It’s not an occasion that happens very often,” said Mary Ellen Gonzales, family service manager at Johnson Funeral Home.

Hundreds of residents donned eclipse glasses and looked to the sky to catch a glimpse of the moon’s shadow passing over the sun. San Angelo, in particular, saw a 97.8% totality.

Even the judge presiding over the ongoing State of Texas v. Ray Vera trial released jurors for their lunch break so that everyone in the case had a chance to view the total solar eclipse.

Gonzales also added that the next solar eclipse visible in the continental United States would take place in 2045 and only be available to view in Canada.

“The next time you will be able to see this is partially in the continental United States,” said Gonzales.

After the 2045 total eclipse, the one will happen in 2027 and require travel to Egypt.

“You will have to travel to Egypt to see another total solar eclipse in full totality, so it’s a pretty big deal.”
