Watch The Rock fight to save his gorilla friend in the bananas “Rampage” trailer

“It’s weird,” the trailer for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Rampage starts, “you, like, hang out with animals more than people.” First of all, it’s not weird. Animals are amazing. And The Rock has our back on that. “Yeah, well, animals get me,” he replies — then goes on to try to save the world, in true Rock fashion, from a bunch of bonkers animal experiments gone wrong.

Now, if the name Rampage and the concept of genetically-modified giant gorillas and wolves wreaking havoc on humanity sounds familiar (you know, aside from King Kong), it’s because the movie is a live-action adaptation of the old-school arcade game of the same name.

But the movie seems to give the OG ’80s game a little more backstory.

Also in the trailer, The Rock — who plays the head of an anti-poaching unit — explains that his character rescued George the albino gorilla when he was only 2 years old, and the two are obviously besties. Of course, if we know anything about monster movies or pretty much anything starring The Rock, it’s that greedy evil scientists will wield their power irresponsibly and things won’t turn out well.

The trailer promises a ton of action and CGI featuring Johnson, Joe Manganiello, Naomie Harris, and Malin Akerman.

Plus, Jeffery Dean Morgan scheming with a super sinister-sounding Southern drawl. Of the group, it’s especially fun to see Manganiello facing off against a ferocious wolf, considering his own past life as a werewolf on True Blood. And he’s also reportedly a big Dungeons & Dragons fanboy, so bringing an arcade game to life doesn’t seem like too much of a stretch. Then there’s the fact that a big chunk of the teaser is set to a somehow even angstier version of The Smashing Pumpkins’ Bullet with Butterfly Wings, a fitting choice since we’re talking animal testing (Rats? Cages? Get it?).

The whole movie looks like a fun kind of ridiculous. After all, if anyone is going to rescue us all from crumbling skyscrapers and massive alligators — while still saving his jumbo misunderstood gorilla pal — it’s going to be The Rock. Wait, could this all be a campaign ad ahead of his apparent presidential run? Let’s hope so.
