UChicago students speak out after anti-war encampment raid

CHICAGO — The University of Chicago’s encampment may be gone but anti-war demonstrators are still pressuring administration to divest from Israel as their military has killed more than 34,000 Palestinians in Gaza.

Anti-war demonstrators held a press conference Thursday morning after their encampment protesting Israel’s war on Gaza was taken down Tuesday on their ninth day of encampment.

University of Chicago student Lucas Borja said there is still a very long path the university will have to take in repairing student and admin relationships.

A video taken by anti-war demonstrators shows University police in riot gear raiding tents and kicking down signs. While there were tense moments between police and demonstrators, no arrest were made.

University president Paul Alivisatos said safety concerns were mounting and the status quo could not continue.

The demonstrators are fighting for Israel to stop bombing Gaza and for the university to divest itself from any organizations doing business with Israel. They say the press conference will provide their perspective of what happened Tuesday morning.

The main campus in Hyde Park has been quiet on campus since the encampment was removed and some students were pleased to see it go even if protests continue.

“This encampment was illegal, obstructive disruptive and incredibly dangerous we had people from off campus populating our quad for days on end,” University of Chicago student Declan Hurley said.
