Watauga County man with face tattoos charged with armed robbery of Boone Zaxby’s

BOONE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Watauga County man was arrested Thursday on charges related to an armed robbery at a Boone fast-food restaurant.

According to the Boone Police Department, officers responded around 3 p.m. May 9 to a armed robbery at the Zaxby’s on N.C. 105 Extension. When they arrived, the suspected reportedly fled on foot.

After identifying the suspect, 35-year-old Mario Rafael Gonzalez, officers located him behind a hotel on U.S. 421 South. A short foot chase ensued before the suspect was taken into custody with help of a Watauga County sheriff’s deputy.

Gonzales, of Zionville near the Tennessee border, was charged with the following:

  • Felony Robbery with a Dangerous Weapon,

  • Resisting an Officer,

  • Possession of Marijuana, and

  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Gonzalez is being held in the Watauga County Detention Center under no bond. He has an initial court date of June 13.
