New Washington Road signal and crosswalk concerns some drivers

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Washington Road’s newest traffic signal blinked to life this morning, which is an additional safety feature for golf fans, who will be flocking to the area.

“It’s definitely needed based on the new traffic that’s going to be created at the old Electrolux building. The community would like to see it permanently, but it’s only going to be up for three weeks,” said Commissioner Sean Frantom.

Many Drivers like the protection of a light when getting out on Washington Road.

“I think it’s fantastic,”

“You like the light.”

“Oh yeah, I come see my sister up here every now and then, and it’s perfect for me,” said Tim Moore.

During tournament days, many in the National Hills use River Ridge because other nearby streets are crowded with Masters traffic and hospitality business customers.

But with the new signal, there is a new pedestrian crosswalk on the west side of the intersection, which drivers say could make turning right difficult when the intersection is crowded with golf fans.

“Is the crosswalk on the wrong side?”

“Yeah, yeah it looks like it might be. Yeah, I guess we can’t turn right if they’re walking right. I guess we’re going to have to wait,” said Kyle Rogers.

Even though new sidewalks are on the east side of the intersection, traffic engineers say the crosswalk on the westside is safer.

“Yes, if you’re in River Ridge, and you’re trying to turn right, you will have a wait to get out. We wanted to maximize how many people in the morning who could get into Augusta National and park,” said John Ussery, Augusta Traffic Engineer.

“Law enforcement will be there the entire time. I don’t think it will be that much of a hardship. They’ll be there manning that post,” said Frantom.

This part of Augusta is used to Masters traffic even if a new signal and crosswalk might take some getting use to.
