‘They should be warm’: Wichita girl makes quilts for the homeless

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — Quinn Wisdom has taken on a new skill – making quilts. Her mom got a sewing machine for Christmas and taught Quinn how to use it.

“So I’m taking like fabric and clothing and like towels and stuff, and then I’m gonna like work the stitches or something and then put them together and make a quilt,” Quinn said.

Quinn started off by making a blanket for herself and her dolls. Then, she had a realization.

“Once I saw, I had my baby doll’s blanket and my blanket,” Quinn said. “And I thought about the homeless. I’m like, ‘maybe they should be warm like this too.’ So I asked my mom, and she said, ‘We can make some for them and pass them out and fall.’ It made me feel really sad, and I thought maybe once they get it, maybe a little happier that they have something warm.”

Quinn has made 10 quilts so far but hasn’t given any away yet. She is stacking up the quilts to 100 and will then give them out.

“They’re out there in the winter stuff, really cold, and I want them to be warm,” Quinn said.

They have drop boxes where people can donate materials to make the quilts. One is in Andover at Pizza Hut, 307 N. Andover Rd.

“It was overflowing, and they’re always overflowing when we come to pick them up,” Wisdom’s mom Jessie Isbell said. “So that’s always really rewarding to see.”

Jessie says Quinn’s behavior is not surprising.

“She’s always had a servant’s heart,” Jessie said. “So she’s always been quick to give her things to others.”

They plan to give out the quilts in the fall.

“She’s going to pass out all of them with like a sack lunch and a water bottle to everybody,” Jessie said. “It’s real awesome to watch her do that. She actually started it with allowance she had been saving for an iPhone. So for most kids having their face and a tablet is pretty secondhand to them. So it’s nice to see her doing something for others and being so aware of her surroundings.”

Last month, Quinn and Jessie shared their story at a city forum to discuss ways to help tackle homelessness. You can watch her speech and interview on our YouTube page.

Quilt by Quinn is collecting donations of clothing, bedding, fabric, thread, yarn and supplies. She also has a GoFundMe and Amazon.
