Warm and unsettled pattern returns

Tonight features a couple of showers with otherwise quiet weather on tap. Our rain showers are arriving out ahead of a mid-level shortwave trough that will move into the region for Tuesday and provide chances for rain. With light winds, a damp ground and high humidity values, patchy areas of dense fog will be possible.

Tuesday begins pretty dry with only a couple of isolated showers, but as we head into the afternoon, a cold front will approach and provide ample chances for scattered showers and perhaps even a rumble or two of thunder. Severe weather is not expected but some brief locally heavy rainfall is possible. In addition, it’s a breezy day on the way, with occasional wind gusts approaching 25 mph possible, with highs in the mid 60s. Expect wet roads particularly by the evening, with rain chances increasing in coverage throughout the day, especially after the mid-afternoon.

Wednesday sees our approaching cold front from Tuesday stall out to our west with a new area of low pressure riding along it to our southwest. With a stout southwesterly breeze in place advecting warm and moist air into the region, rounds of showers will be a good bet. In addition, these showers will be efficient rainfall producers, resulting in the potential for locally heavy rainfall. High temperatures will reach close to 70 degrees in many location.

Thursday provides our next chance for severe weather, as a stout low pressure system rides up and into the Ohio River Valley along our aforementioned stalled front. Similarly to last week, though we won’t have a lot of instability in our atmosphere, there will be plenty of wind shear to provide the risk for damaging wind gusts and perhaps an isolated tornado, though the intensity of severe weather and the robustness of the atmosphere are not expected to be quite as intense as last week’s severe weather. Nevertheless, it’s a threat we are watching closely. Any rain that falls will have the potential to drop locally heavy rainfall, which will give us a threat for high water to watch as well. The best chance for severe weather will be during the late afternoon. High temperatures will jump into the low 70s. Even without storms, windy conditions are expected, with wind gusts in excess of 40 mph possible.

Friday sees our cold front finally cross the region but behind that front will be much colder air and a northwesterly breeze. So, similar to last week, a northwest flow will enable showers to hang around, along with low clouds. It’ll still be a breezy day, and we will see high temperatures about 20 degrees cooler, as they struggle to reach 50 degrees.

Saturday gives our mountain counties the risk for an isolated shower early but we’ll see clearing skies with high pressure taking control. We will see our temperatures respond as well, with highs in the upper 50s.

Sunday begins on a dry note but by the afternoon, a warm front will cross which will give us the chance for a few showers. There should be plenty of dry time and it will be very warm, with highs near 70 once again.

A tick removal kit should be a staple in your house this spring

Monday provides the risk for an isolated shower or two with a weak front nearby but we should see plenty of dry time once again with highs in the low 70s.

Looking ahead, we will see a much warmer pattern continue – our pattern will also turn much drier and less active with high pressure in control. High temperatures on Tuesday will jump into the mid 70s with mostly sunny skies. A few showers return with a weak front Wednesday into Thursday but there should be plenty of dry time and it’s still going to be very warm, with highs in the 70s.

We are in spring forest fire season in West Virginia – this means don’t burn between 7 AM and 5 PM through May 31st. Low humidity values during the daytime, along with breezier and warmer conditions will at times increase the fire threat, hence the burn ban during most of the daytime. Follow all regulations or be faced with potential consequences, such as fines! In Virginia, the spring fire season continues through April 30th – don’t burn before 4 PM.
