Want the perfect spot to watch the solar eclipse? Va. State Parks offering prime locations

RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR)– Virginia State Parks are inviting guests to visit local state parks for the solar eclipse on April 8.

While finding the perfect spot to watch the solar eclipse, 42 state parks across the state of Virginia will host educational programs led by knowledgeable park rangers. The Commonwealth’s pristine, natural settings and commitment to environmental education provide an ideal backdrop for observing the wonder firsthand.

Some parks are offering eclipse events starting as early as March 23, giving visitors the chance to learn how to be a safe observer and explore the science behind the eclipse.

What visitors will see during the solar eclipse will depend on the weather and the park’s location. However, the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation says many parks, especially in Southwest Virginia, are expected to experience more than 85 percent sun obscurity.  For a breakdown by park of eclipse start, peak and end times, and the percent of obscurity, click here.

Those interested in visiting a state park for the eclipse are encouraged to plan ahead and arrive early, as the DCR expects parking and viewing areas to fill up quickly. In the safe practice of an eclipse, state parks will be selling a limited number of solar viewing glasses for purchase. Glasses will cost $1 plus tax and will be available for purchase in parks’ visitor centers and gift shops.
