VSU may lose some degree programs

Apr. 17—VALDOSTA — Valdosta State University may soon lose some bachelor's and master's degree programs through downsizing. The closures are part of a strategic plan called VSU 2030, a statement from the university said. The plan is intended to align its degree programs with student and employer demand, the university said.

A working group examined several low-enrollment programs at the university.

The following nine programs were submitted April 8 to the University System of Georgia for closure approval:

— Bachelor of Arts with Major in French Language and Literature;

— Bachelor of Fine Arts with Major in Art Teacher Education;

— Bachelor of Science in Education with Major in Special Education;

— Bachelor of Science with Major in Applied Mathematics, General;

— Bachelor of Science with Major in Physics;

— Master of Education with Major in Middle Grades Education;

— Master of Arts with Major in History, General;

— Master of Arts in Teaching with Major in ESOL (English to Speakers of Other Languages); and

— Clinical Doctorate in Speech Language Pathology.

Students already enrolled in these programs will be allowed to finish their studies in that field at VSU or move to an alternate program, the statement said. Starting this fall, new students will not be admitted to those programs.
