Voting open for New York’s next Habitat and Access Stamp

NEW YORK STATE (WETM) — New Yorkers can help the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) choose the next species to be featured on its Habitat and Access Stamp.

The DEC posted a poll on Facebook on April 23 that asks people to vote for the species that will be featured on its 2024-2025 Habitat and Access Stamp. Voters can choose between the brook trout, the North American porcupine, the common raven, and the eastern hellbender. New Yorkers have through April 29 to vote for their favorite animal, and the winner will be announced shortly after.

The Habitat and Access Stamp is a fundraising sticker that people can purchase for $5 with their New York sporting license or on its own. The stamp was created by legislation in 2002 and features a different animal species that is native to New York every year. Funds raised by the Habitat and Access Stamp are used to support the DEC’s fish and wildlife habitat conservation projects. The funds also help the DEC increase access to lands for fish and wildlife recreation.

Habitat and Access Stamps can be purchased wherever hunting and fishing licenses are sold or through the DEC’s online licensing system. The stamp is not required to hunt, fish, or trap, and people do not have to have a sporting license to make a $5 donation and receive the stamp.
