Voters in Crossroads head to polls for stadium tax decision

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — It’s election day, and Kansas City voters were excited to go to the polls and have their voices heard on Question 1 in Jackson County.

The 3/8-cent sales tax would fund a new Royals stadium in the East Crossroads and improvements to Arrowhead Stadium.

FOX4 talked with plenty of voters in Kansas City who said they got out to vote because it’s their civic duty and something they always do.

Others said they don’t vote in every election but made sure to get out for this one because it’s important to them, and they want a say in the stadium sales tax measure.

“This one is important to me. It’s about the stadium, and I want to see the teams stay here in town,” said Marguerite Boleware, who lives in Kansas City, Missouri.

Some voters told FOX4 that their minds were made up on Question 1 from the beginning and that campaign ads on both sides didn’t sway their vote.

“I’m voting yes. I don’t love all of the things that have happened, and with how things have been handled, but at the end of the day, I think a downtown baseball stadium would be fun and good and wonderful thing for the city,” Porto explained. “So I’m voting yes for that reason.”

Officials expect the April 2 election will have a higher voter turnout than typical April elections due to the stadium sales tax measure.

“It’s my right to vote, so if people don’t vote, then they can’t gripe about what’s going on in their community,” said Kansas City resident Bill Yord.

For Teresa Grado, a Kansas City resident, the decision to vote yes was all about the teams and keeping the Chiefs and the Royals in Jackson County.

“I don’t want to lose the Chiefs and the Royals. If we lose them, we will never get another team back in Kansas City and then what are we going to do in Kansas City,” Grado said. “We aren’t going to have anything. What are we going to have for people to come and visit and see? Right now we are at a staggering rate of people coming to visit, and that’s because we have the Chiefs and the Royals. So we should all be here today. We should all be here at every election, but today, for sure.”

Voters on both sides look forward to learning the final result after the polls close Tuesday night and votes have been counted.

“It just seemed to come up so quickly, and there is a lot of passion on both sides and I also think there is a lot of love from the community on both sides,” said Beth Walker, who lives in Kansas City. “So I just wanted to do my part.”
