Below are the nominees for The Charlotte Observer high school athlete of the week.

This week’s nominees

Jehue Alston, Julius Chambers baseball: The Cougars’ sophomore went 3 for 3 at the plate to lead Julius Chambers to an 18-6 win at Berry on March 18.

The next day, Alston tossed a complete-game, no-hitter with 10 strikeouts on the mound, while going 2 for 2 at the plate in an 18-0 win at Harding.

Ethan Barletta, Piedmont track: The Panthers’ junior won the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 7 3/4 inches at the Pre-Rocky River Conference meet at Piedmont High on March 21.

Barletta also threw a 123-6 to finish as runner-up in the discus at the same meet.

Nick Bierman, Charlotte Catholic track: The Cougars’ junior won the 200-meter dash in a personal-best time of 23.02 seconds at Providence High on March 22.

Bierman also won the 100-meter dash in 11.37 and ran the anchor-leg of the winning 800-meter relay in a school record 1:34.77 at the same meet.

Caleb Butts, Central Cabarrus tennis: The Vikings’ senior was a perfect 3-0 at No. 1 singles this week, beating his opponents from Carson (6-2, 6-3, March 18), Northwest Cabarrus (6-2, 6-3, March 20) and Concord (6-1, 6-4, March 21).

Butts is 6-0 overall at No. 1 singles this season.

Aedan Davies, Community School of Davidson lacrosse: The Spartans’ senior scored three goals and had five groundballs in a 12-2 win at SouthLake Christian on March 18.

Davies also had five goals and five groundballs in a 19-8 victory at Pine Lake Prep on March 21.

Davies finished off the week with two more goals and seven groundballs in an 11-5 win at North Lincoln March 22.

Davies has 23 goals and 49 groundballs for a Community School of Davidson team that is still perfect at 10-0 this season.

Nicholas Grace, Ardrey Kell track: The Knights’ senior ran a 4:19.21 to win the 1,600-meter run at the Weddington Invitational on March 23.

Grace finished fifth in 3,200-meter run at the 4A state indoor championships Feb. 9.

Nic Harris, Charlotte Christian baseball: The Knights’ senior earned the win on the mound with six strikeouts in six innings of work to lead Charlotte Christian to a 3-1 win over Charlotte Catholic on March 18.

Harris also earned the victory on the mound, going 4.2 innings, striking out five batters in an 8-0 win over T.C. Roberson on March 23.

Harris is 2-1 on the mound with 25 strikeouts in 17.2 innings of work while boasting a 1.98 earned-run average (ERA) this season.

Chase Kiker, Metrolina Christian baseball: The Warriors’ sophomore was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts and three innings of work, while going 1 for 1 at the plate with a double in a 19-0 win at SouthLake Christian on March 19.

Kiker also earned the win on the mound with 13 strikeouts in five innings of work, while going 1-for-4 at the plate in a 7-3 victory over Union Academy on March 21.

Kiker has 58 strikeouts in 26 innings on the mound, while going 5-0, allowing only one run this season, giving him a 0.27 ERA.

Kiker is also hitting .375 with two home runs, two doubles and seven RBI for a Metrolina Christian that is still unbeaten at 10-0 this season.

James Lowe, Charlotte Country Day baseball: The Buccaneers’ junior earned the victory on the mound, going six innings, allowing six hits, while striking out four batters in a 4-2 win over Carmel Christian. In the same game, Lowe was 1 for 2 at the plate with a double, two runs scored and two stolen bases as Charlotte Country Day beat Carmel Christian, 4-2, on March 21.

Lowe is 3-1 on the mound with 2.33 ERA, while striking out 21 batters in 24 innings, and is hitting .476 with four doubles, seven RBI and 11 runs scored for Charlotte Country Day (4-3) this season.

Mason Mierzwa, Cannon School baseball: The Cougars’ junior went 4 for 5 with a double, three RBIs and two stolen bases to lead Cannon School to a 14-5 win at Gaston Day on March 21.

Mierzwa is batting .455 with a double, a triple, three RBIs, seven runs scored and four stolen bases for Cannon School (2-5) this season.

Marshall Saunders, Myers Park golf: The Mustangs’ junior shot a 2-under-par 34, with two birdies, to earn medalist honors in a match with Ardrey Kell at Myers Park Country Club on March 19.

Saunders’ play helped the Myers Park boys’ golf team to a two-shot victory over Ardrey Kell.

Trey Schubert, Pine Lake Prep baseball: The Pride junior went 3 for 5 at the plate with a double and a RBI, while tossing a complete-game, six-hitter with six strikeouts on the mound to lead Pine Lake Prep to an 8-2 win at Corvian Charter March 19.

Schubert also went 3 for 4 at the plate with a double, two RBI and two runs scored in a 9-7 loss to Corvian Charter on March 21.

Schubert is batting .448 with two home runs, four doubles and nine RBI, while striking out 24 batters in 18 innings of work, while boasting a 2.33 ERA for Pine Lake Prep (6-4) this season.
