Volunteers keep busy Saturday at Stamp Out Hunger
May 12—GOSHEN — U.S. Postal Service carriers around the nation were busy for Saturday's Stamp Out Hunger food drive event, and Goshen was no exception.
"It's been exciting," said volunteer John Silva as he sorted food donations at the Goshen Salvation Army, which along with The Window, was a beneficiary of the drive.
According to the USPS website, each year, letter carriers across the country head out on their routes on the second Saturday in May to collect donations of nonperishable food items to benefit local food pantries.
"Since launching in 1993, the National Association of Letter Carriers' annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive has grown into the nation's largest one-day food drive, helping to fill the shelves of food banks in cities and towns throughout the United States," the site added.
Susi Miller, of The Window, was at the Salvation Army shortly before 4 p.m., helping to coordinate efforts.
"We're probably getting close to 9,000 pounds now," she noted.
Taylor Quincy was another volunteer food sorter.
"I love it," he said.
Capt. Kendra Hixenbaugh is with the Goshen Salvation Army.
"It's been going well, especially in the evening, as the postal carriers finish their routes and bring the food it," she said.
