Violent night: At least five people shot since sundown Wednesday

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Despite a new report from the Memphis-Shelby Crime Commission showing a decrease in crime, Memphis Police are investigating at least 112 homicides at 116 days into the year.

At least five people were shot after sunset Wednesday. Police reponded to three shootings in a span of three hours.

  • There was a deadly attack overnight along Cloister Avenue in Parkway Village;

  • Two men in southwest Memphis were shot and critically injured;

  • A man made his way to the Crump police station in critical condition, telling detectives a family member opened fire at Rayner and McLemore.

There was little sign of the violence Thursday morning in Parkway Village, where a man was killed overnight.

Neighbor Tommie Maxwell said that may be because the victim in that case is believed to have been killed inside his own home.

Maxwell said his neighbor of six months may have invited the killer into his home.

“He was a good guy. And I hate that we lose the good guys, it’s sad,” Maxwell said. “You need to do more of a background check of the people you bring around your house, because all people you come in contact with, are not all safe people.”

The house has surveillance cameras outside, but according to Maxwell, the house is equipped with security cameras inside as well, which could offer police a glimpse at the gunman they are working to track down.

Nearly two hours before that deadly attack, police investigated a double shooting in Southwest Memphis, in the area of Eighth Road and Charter.

One man was sprawled out in the street, shot in his back and face. A second man was also hit in the face.

Man allegedly shot in the head by his cousin at South Memphis store

Half an hour earlier, police say a man walked into one of the precincts desperate for help. He was shot in the head.

The victim said his own cousin fired at least seven rounds along East McLemore and Rayner, in the Glenview community.
