‘Violent crime suspect’ arrested in Hillsborough County: HCSO

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO) announced it arrested a man following the armed robbery and battery of a jogger earlier this week.

The sheriff’s office said the incident happened around 1:48 a.m. on April 16 when Matthew Green Jr., 31, robbed the 7-Eleven on Fishhawk Blvd. in Lithia.

HCSO said Green told the employee behind the counter that he had a gun and demanded money from the register. When the employee refused, Green fled the scene, investigators said.

A short time later, deputies responded to a call of a jogger who was strangled until they were unconscious and who’s phone was stolen in the process.

Investigators said they were able to track Green to a home on Juliano Drive in Riverview. On arrival, detectives found the residence had an open window and screen that had been tampered with.

After contacting the resident of the home, a search was conducted which revealed Green hiding behind a washer and dryer inside, according to HCSO.

“Our community should rest easier tonight knowing that a dangerous individual, intent on terrorizing innocent lives with acts of violence, is no longer free to roam our streets,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Thanks to the swift and diligent work of our dedicated detectives, this suspect’s reckless actions were brought to a halt before he could inflict further harm to anyone else.”

Green is facing the following charges:

  • Robbery with a Firearm (Less than $750)

  • Robbery $750 or More but Less Than $20,000

  • Battery by Strangulation

  • Grand Theft Third Degree ($750 – $5,000)

  • Violation of Parole, Probable Cause, Violation of Parole Robbery Gun or Deadly Weapon x2

  • Violation of Parole, Probable Cause, Violation of Parole Felon/Delinquent with Gun/Concealed Weapon/Ammo x2
